Australia: New visa rules for Indian students from July 1!

June 30, 2023

According to recent news reports, Indian graduates studying in Australian tertiary institutions can apply for work without sponsorship for up to eight years, starting from July 1st, 2023. Additionally, international students will be able to increase their work hours to 48 hours per fortnight, and a two-year work visa extension will be granted.

This development comes after India and Australia recently entered a migration and mobility partnership pact, aiming to create fresh avenues for students, academic researchers, and business professionals. As part of this agreement, the Mobility Arrangement for Talented Early-professionals Scheme (MATES) has been established, offering exciting prospects for young professionals from India.

What is the MATES program all about?

MATES, a temporary visa program, will provide 3,000 annual openings for graduates from recognised Indian universities who hold specialised degrees. The program focuses on occupations such as engineering, mining, financial technology, artificial intelligence, information and communication technology, agricultural technology, and renewable energy. To be eligible for the MATES Visa, candidates must be below the age of 31, have obtained their education from a recognised and verified university, and be in the early stages of their careers.

Fees and Processing Time

While the specific details regarding fees and visa processing time for the MATES visa are yet to be announced, this initiative aims to attract and retain highly skilled workers in Australia. The government's goal is to streamline the visa process for high-skilled professionals and implement measures that benefit international students.

Australia's intention to revamp its immigration system aligns with its efforts to expedite the entry of talented individuals into the country. By opening up new opportunities for Indian graduates and extending work visa options, Australia is reinforcing its commitment to international talent and fostering stronger educational and professional ties between the two nations.
