Sharp Increase in Indian Student and Work Visas in the UK: Healthcare in Demand!

September 25, 2023

Despite concerns about potential visa restrictions in the United Kingdom, there has been a significant surge in the number of visas granted to Indian students and migrant workers. These developments may have a far-reaching impact on the country's labour market and international student community.

Record Work Visas Granted

In an effort to address labour shortages, the UK issued a record-breaking 321,000 visas to migrant workers for employment until June. This marks a substantial 45% increase in work visas compared to the previous year, indicating the UK's continued reliance on foreign labour post-Brexit.

Healthcare Roles on the Rise

Notably, a substantial portion of these work visas, totalling 121,290, were designated for "health and care" roles, reflecting a remarkable 157% increase. The National Health Service and the care sector, both grappling with staffing challenges, notably recruited Indian and Nigerian nationals to fill these critical positions. To tackle the growing number of job vacancies, the government expanded the shortage occupation list and simplified visa rules for importing foreign workers.

Surge in Student Visas

Simultaneously, the student visa category also witnessed a significant surge. Data from the UK Home Office reveals a notable 54% increase in sponsored study visas granted to Indian students, reaching a total of 142,848 visas issued.

This surge represents an impressive rise of 49,883 visas compared to the year ending June 2022. Importantly, this figure stands seven times higher than the corresponding period in 2019.

On a broader scale, the UK granted nearly 500,000 sponsored study visas in June 2023, marking a 23% increase from the previous year. Indians accounted for nearly one-third of these visas, while approximately 154,000 were granted to students' dependents.

Future Trends and Challenges

Despite these positive trends, concerns about immigration persist, as the growing number of migrants poses political challenges for Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. In 2022, net migration reached a record high of 606,000.

Jonathan Portes, a professor of economics at King’s College London, commented on these trends, stating, "The big picture is that the post-Brexit migration system continues to drive two shifts; from EU to non-EU migration; and from sectors which benefited from free movement, to sectors where workers qualify under the new system."

He added, "Overall, this means migration is likely to be higher skilled and higher paid; but also less flexible, market-oriented, and responsive to demand. The longer-term impact on the health of the UK economy remains uncertain."

As the UK grapples with the evolving dynamics of immigration, the rise in Indian student and work visas underscores the country's role as a destination for both education and employment opportunities, while also raising questions about the potential consequences of these trends on the nation's economy and labour market.
