The Migration Program aims to accomplish a variety of economic and social goals. The Migration Program will have a total planning level of 160,000 spaces in 2021-22, divided into the following streams:
Skill (79,600 spots) – this stream aims to boost the economy’s productive capacity and address skill shortages in the labour market, particularly in regional Australia. Family (77,300 slots) – this stream is primarily made up of Partner visas, which allow Australians to reunite with family members living abroad and provide them with citizenship opportunities. Special Eligibility (100 places) – Including permanent residents returning to Australia after a period overseas, this stream covers visas for those in special circumstances. Child (3,000 places) – this stream is demand-driven and not subject to a ceiling, it is managed outside the Migration Program as it.

Program size and composition
Each year, the Migration Program’s size and content are determined in conjunction with the Australian Government’s Budget process. Between November 2020 and February 2021, the Department of Home Affairs worked widely with State and Territory governments, academia, business, and community organisations to inform the formulation of the 2021-22 Migration Program parameters.
When planning the programme, public contributions, economic and labour force estimates, international research, net abroad migration, and economic and budgetary modelling are all considered.
State and Territory nominated visa categories – 2021-22 nomination allocations Nomination allocations in the following visa categories are available to States and Territories under the 2021-22 Migration Program settings:
- Skilled – Nominated (subclass 190)
- Regional Skilled Work (Provisional) (subclass 491)
- Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP)
Each state and territory evaluates applications based on criteria specific to their jurisdiction.
