16 New Occupations Offer PR Eligibility to Workers Immigrating to Canada

New additions of 16 occupations now covered by Express Entry in Canada include nurse aides, long-term care aides, hospital attendants, elementary and secondary school teaching assistants and transport truck drivers.

In an effort to attract skilled workers to the country in light of skill shortages in critical industries including healthcare, construction, and transportation, Canada has added 16 additional vocations to the list of professions eligible for permanent residence.

According to the National Occupation Classification (NOC) 2021, among the 16 occupations now covered by Express Entry, a point-based immigration application system, are nurse assistants, long-term care aides, hospital attendants, elementary and secondary school teacher assistants, and transport truck drivers.

Sean Fraser, Minister of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship said, “These changes will support Canadians in need of these services, and they will support employers by providing them with a more robust workforce who we can depend on to drive our economy forward into a prosperous future.”

Foreign nationals with work experience in the following 16 occupations are now eligible to apply through Express Entry:

  • Dental assistants and dental laboratory assistants
  • Nurse aides, orderlies and patient service associates
  • Pharmacy technical assistants and pharmacy assistants
  • Elementary and secondary school teacher assistants
  • Sheriffs and Bailiffs
  • Correctional service officers
  • By-law enforcement and other regulatory officers
  • Aestheticians, electrologists and related occupations
  • Residential and commercial installers and servicers
  • Pest controllers and fumigators
  • Other repairers and servicers
  • Transport truck drivers
  • Bus drivers, subway operators and other transit operators
  • Heavy equipment operators
  • Aircraft assemblers
  • Aircraft assembly inspectors

The NOC system, which is updated to reflect changes in the economy and the type of work, is used to track and categorize every job in the Canadian labor market. Refugees and Citizenship Canada uses NOC to define and evaluate the occupational eligibility requirements for its temporary and permanent residency programs, Immigration.

The Canadian Support Workers Association (CANSWA) welcomed this initiative as a means of addressing the lack of personal support workers in the Canadian healthcare system. According to Miranda Ferrier, CEO of the Canadian Support Workers Association, “personal support workers provide the majority of the bedside nursing care to vulnerable Canadians across our country and are desperately in need of assistance to ensure that basic patient care can be provided”.

Every area of the Canadian economy depends on the trucking business, according to Stephen Laskowski, president of the Canadian Trucking Alliance. The declaration made by Minister Fraser today will contribute to the security of supply chains, from manufacturing to agriculture, by giving trucking companies access to a global labor pool that was not before available to the industry.

As the military suffers from low recruitment levels, the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF) have announced that permanent citizens, including a significant number of Indians, will now be permitted to enlist.
